Dear members, dear friends,
When we were watching television at the time of the changeover from 2013 to 2014 we realized that when they showed the «trip» of this transition around the globe, the organization that we have the honour to serve as executive director and chairman, is present in almost all time zones, and therefore was during 24 hours continuously celebrating the New Year. However, we don’t think it advisable to toast with all of you at each individual moment, but it does really show our global perspective.
2013 has seen new members entering GSGF, making it stronger than ever.

Although the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are two separate jurisdictions, they share common policies in the areas of energy and smart grids. There is a single target of 40% of electricity to be generated from renewable energy by 2020, one of the highest targets globally. More
GSGF Activities
Do you have a good idea for a new working group? Let us know, we will gather the ideas and discuss the working groups of 2014 in our next telco’s!
In 2013 three working groups joined forces in order to gather and construct a global perspective on interoperability, grid connectivity of distributed generation and the grid user interface. All on schedule, the reports can be expected for comment by February 15th and their ultimate release is planned for March 31st, or earlier.

Road Map for Smart Grid Deployment in Israel
The Israeli Smart Energy Association (ISEA) formally released on December 9th the first comprehensive study and recommendations for a Road Map for Smart Grid Deployment in Israel. The report, carried out by a team of 14 local experts and advisors, from Israel, Europe, and the US, provides an outlook on the technologies, trends, regulations, marketing aspects and a uniquely developed Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) model that enables to dynamically address a sensitivity analysis. GRID+: Study on Scalability and Replicability of Smart Grid Projects
Intermediate results of the GRID+ projectIn order to provide operational support for the development of the European Electricity Grids Initiative (EEGI), a coordination and support action was created: GRID+. The EEGI is one of the European Industrial Initiatives under the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) which proposes a 9-year European research, development, and demonstration program to accelerate innovation and the development of the electricity networks of the future in Europe.
Important objectives within the GRID+ project are to:
- determine the scalability and replicability of smart grid projects,
- propose methods and tools for this purpose
- propose solutions for enhancing the scalability and replicability of on-going and new projects.

IBM: The Smart Energy Consumer
This paper has been written by one of SGA’s inaugural board members, Jeff Lee. It looks at the transformation that has started in the energy industry – an industry that has been engineer-driven for 100 years, but today is being transformed by the customer, and what we as participants can do to benefit from this change.
Financial analysts are now saying utility stocks are moving to «risk / watch» from «defensive» due to the transformation happening in our industry that exposes earnings. External influences like pollution, cost of energy, climate change, renewable energy, independence from poles and wires etc are motivating and stimulating the customer to be active in energy alternatives. On January 22nd 2014, the European Commission (EC) published its much anticipated Climate and Energy Framework to 2030 which is intended to ensure regulatory certainty for investors, a coordinated approach among member states, drive continued progress towards a low-carbon economy, a competitive and secure energy system that ensures affordable energy for consumers while increasing the security of the EU’s energy supply, reducing Europe’s dependence on energy imports and creating new opportunities for growth and jobs by taking into account potential price impacts for the longer-term.
